The adaptive re-use of old industrial buildings creates unique design challenges. In the case of Millbrook Lofts, formerly a century-old cold storage building, the challenge was to create a vibrant loft-style residential community without losing the industrial character of the original structure.  The developer chose to expose all major structural elements in their raw state including enormous columns and concrete floors and using them as design focal points. APD’s task was to utilize the developer’s existing furniture inventory to create two additional model units alongside the original model unit. Both spaces featured challenging layouts and unusual floor plans which made them harder to rent. By carefully re-defining the living spaces to highlight the potential of each area, our approach helped potential tenants visualize how they these apartments could fit their own lifestyles. Vibrant colors were set off against the raw concrete surfaces and rough industrial features of the building to create energetic and contemporary living spaces.
